The radio crackles to life, an excited voice announcing that a tower reports small arms fire in the vicinity of our base. News of this is passed up to our command. In in calmly excited tones, the shooter's description, grid numbers, and our current forces in the area are analyzed and a decision is made to send out a patrol to investigate. They're beaten to the punch by a patrol already outside of the wire. Further descriptions are traded and the patrol moves in to look for our red-shirted shooter. Minutes pass and we soon receive the patrol leader's report.
The shooter was with the bride's family. Celebratory fire. Our guys tell him to not fire so close to the base, wish him a good day, and go on their way.
Just another Thursday - the wedding day - in Iraq.
